Worked with Josephine Baker at the Beverly Hilton
Hotel in Los Angeles. It was 1974 and I was the stage manager and artist relation person for
Marathon Productions. When I heard she was booked, I couldn't wait to meet
her. Sad thing was that Marathon didn't realize what a personality they had
booked. When she arrived in Los Angeles no one was there to receive her as she
should have been received. No fan fare, nothing. Her nephew was acting as her
manager. She was a wonderful person. It was a pleasure and a privilege to work
with her.
They didn't have an opening act for her so I told them about Monti Rock III. I
had worked with and knew Monti from New York. They asked me to book him. I reached him in New York and he took the gig. He was superb. No one
could have been a better choice for Josephine Baker. He came on stage in a white
suite, a white, wide brimmed hat an a long, white feathered boa. He knocked them
dead. Sometimes Josephine was late, so I would stand off stage and signal Monti
to stretch it out. If you know Monti, that was no problem; he could stay on all
night if you gave him the opportunity. You can check him out by clicking
