Bob and Jackie

Met Bob Hilliard and his wife Jackie (Jacqueline Dalya), while running a private yacht that was docked at the Kingston Hotel on Miami Beach. The owner, Arthur Nardin, was staying there for the season. Bob and Jackie (Jacqueline Dalya)  Hilliard were also guests at the Kingston. Nardin invited them out for a day of fishing in the gulf-stream. The Yacht was a forty foot, Chris Craft with a flying bridge and outriggers for fishing. Bob and Nardin sat in the fishing chairs and Jackie sat up in the flying bridge with me. We chatted most of the day. We visited frequently around the hotel until they returned North.
Jackie asked me to call them when I got to New York.  I brought the yacht up the coast to New York (which is a chapter in itself.) While in New York, I visited them at their home in Leonia, New Jersey and we became close friends.  They often picked me up at the 79th Street Yacht  Basin, where the  yacht was tied, and showed me around New York.
They moved to Hollywood and some years later I moved to San Francisco. I  often visited them and usually stayed there when I was in Hollywood. There is much more to this story which I am adding to my novel, will appear here.

Hazel Flagg
Musical, Satire, Comedy
Setting: Conference room of Everywhere Magazine; Dr. Downer's house; Railroad depot, Stonyhead; New York hotel suite; Laura Carew's office; Roseland Ballroom; various other New York locales. The Thirties.
Music by Jule Styne; Book by Ben Hecht; Lyrics by Bob Hilliard.

David Mann appeared in the films: 'Twenty Grand', 'I Dood It', 'Four Jills and A Jeep', 'Pin-Up Girl', and (during his Artie Shaw days) 'Second Chorus', starring Fred Astaire, Burgess Meridith and Paulette Goddard and Shaw's orchestra. He went to Hollywood in the 1950's where he composed the scores for three Disney Nature Series films, -'The Living Desert', 'Water Birds' and 'Seal Island'. After that two year stint in Hollywood, New York called him back. It was then that he collaborated with lyricist Bob Hilliard on perhaps his biggest hit, "In The Wee Small Hours". They had written the song while driving up Broadway, and spotted Frank Sinatra on the street. The singer was in a receptive mood that day and they got him up to a piano room and demonstrated the tune. Redd Evans was one of the best pluggers in the business was there, and Sinatra listened and calmly locked the door and said, "Fellas, this is my kinda song..." Nelson Riddle's arrangement set the tone for Sinatra's album.
