Playland, set in a traveling amusement park encamped on the outskirts of a town in Athol Fugard's beloved Karoo, is a powerful allegory.  In this unlikely spot, on New year's Eve 1989, two men - a white returnee from the Border and a black night-watchman - meet accidentally and, as the eighties become the nineties, work through their differences through a shared nightmare towards reconciliation and the hope of peace.
